A calm, quiet space for a first counselling session

The short answerA first counselling session is a 45 to 50 minute conversation. You and your counsellor get to know each other, you talk about what brought you in, and together you decide what you would like to work on. You do not need to prepare anything, and you do not have to share more than you are ready to.

Many people wait weeks, or even years, before booking a first session. Often the hesitation is not about the problem itself but about the unknown: What will they ask me? Will I have to talk about everything? What if I cry, or have nothing to say? This guide walks you through what usually happens, so you can arrive feeling a little more at ease.

Is it normal to feel nervous before a first session?

Yes, very. Sitting down with someone new to talk about personal matters is unfamiliar for almost everyone. Feeling nervous, unsure or even a little embarrassed does not mean you are doing it wrong. It usually means this matters to you. A good counsellor expects this and will set a gentle pace from the very start.

Choosing the right type of session

Before you book, it helps to pick the format that fits your situation:

Not sure which one suits you? Say so when you book, and we will help you choose. You can also decide between in-person and online sessions, whichever feels more comfortable.

What actually happens in a first counselling session?

Every counsellor works a little differently, but a first session usually follows a gentle shape:

  1. A warm welcome. You settle in, and your counsellor explains how the session will work, how long it lasts, and how your information is handled. This is a good time to ask any questions about privacy.
  2. What brought you here. You are invited to share, in your own words, what has been on your mind and why you decided to come now. You can start anywhere.
  3. A little background. Your counsellor may ask about your daily life, sleep, work or studies, relationships and support. These questions help build a fuller picture, not to judge you.
  4. What you hope will change. Together you talk about your goals. They can be small, such as sleeping better or feeling less on edge.
  5. A first plan. You discuss how counselling might help, which approach could suit you, and how often to meet. Approaches may include psychotherapy, CBT techniques or mindfulness-based support, depending on your needs.
  6. Time for your questions. You are welcome to ask anything before you leave, including what the next session will look like.
You set the pace. A first session is about feeling heard, not about telling your whole story.

What you do not have to do

How to prepare for your first session

You do not need to prepare anything, but a few small steps can help:

Is what I say kept private?

Sessions at LAYA are completely confidential. At the beginning, ask your counsellor how your information is stored and whether confidentiality has any limits. It is standard good practice to explain this clearly, and you are entitled to know before you share anything personal.

What happens after the first session?

By the end, you will usually have a sense of whether you feel comfortable with your counsellor and the approach. Many people feel lighter, some feel tired, and some feel a mix of both. All of this is normal. How many sessions you need depends on what you are working on and how you prefer to go about it. Some people come for a few sessions, others continue for longer. If you would like to plan ahead, see our packages.

Counselling, therapy and psychiatry: what is the difference?

Counselling and therapy are talking-based approaches, where you work with a trained professional on emotions, thoughts, behaviour and relationships. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose conditions and prescribe medication. Counselling does not involve medication. If your counsellor feels you would benefit from a medical assessment, they will tell you openly and can suggest next steps.

If you need urgent help. Counselling is not an emergency service. If you are thinking about harming yourself, or you or someone else is in immediate danger, please contact local emergency services on 112 or reach out to a trusted person right away. In India, Tele-MANAS offers free mental health support on 14416.

Counselling is a supportive practice and does not replace medical care. If you have physical symptoms or a medical concern, please consult a doctor as well.
